Blood Type and Rh Lab Test Information
Test 006049
Blood Type Test
This blood type test provide the user with their blood type (A, AB, B or O) and rhesus factor (Rh negative or Rh positive).
There are two distinct chemical molecules present on the surface of the red blood cells. These are:
One molecule "A" and the other molecule "B."
It is important that blood types be matched before blood transfusions take place. In an emergency, type O blood can be given because it most likely to be accepted by all blood types. However, there is still a risk involved.
Pregnancy and Blood Type and Rh:
It is particularly important for expectant mothers to know their blood's Rh factor. Occasionally, a baby will inherit an Rh positive blood type from its father while the mother has an Rh negative blood type. The baby's life could be in great danger if the mother's Rh negative blood attacks the baby's Rh positive blood. If this happens, an exchange transfusion may save the baby's life. The baby's blood can be exchanged for new blood that matches the mother's.
Blood Type Factors and Definitions:
Red Blood Count (RBC) - the number of red blood cells to evaluate anemia
White Blood Count (WBC) - the number of white blood cells to evaluate infection
Differential Count - the proportions of the different types of white blood cells varies in infection, allergies, etc.
Platelet Count - the count of the number of these cells which participate in blood clotting
Coagulation (clotting) studies - bleeding time, prothrombin time and other tests determine the clotting process in the blood
Hemoglobin - a measure of the oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood
Type A - Only the A protein is present.
Type B - Only the B protein is present.
Type AB - Both proteins are present.
Type O - Neither protein is present (about 40 percent of the population)
