DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone) Lab Test Information
Test 04101
Hormone Tests
Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) is a steroid that is produced by both the kidneys and testis. The levels of this steroid increase before the onset of puberty, and decrease significantly with age. DHEA and DHEA-Sulfate are the major precursors of 17-ketosteroids, which are essential in normal steroid hormone production.
The DHEA test may be done to check for cancer of the adrenal glands of the kidneys, because DHEA is over-produced during adrenal cancer.
